Owning a good wood shredder can mean fast timbering, shredding, and of course, timely delivery of the same. In addition to a growing number of distributors of such shredding machineries, manufacturers too have starred to invest in R&D to cater innovative and customized shredders.

But before buying a wood shredder, following are some important points that you should pay heed to:

  • Durability: The wood shredder should have steel or good alloy blades.

  • A proper space of storage: You should have a proper place to store the machine, when not in use.

  • Choose the right model: Most wood shredders are built with 2 chutes - a smaller one with blades that shred branches into chips and a larger chute with blades, hammers, or flails to reduce plant stalks and leaves into tiny mulch. If you want to shred lots of leaves and stalks, go for a model with lots of flails or hammers.

  • The power requirement: Go for at least 10 horsepower engine that can shred branches up to 3 inches or around 7.5 centimeters in diameter. Before buying, check the weight of the shredder, as you want it to be sturdy and stable. A bigger machine can handle more capacity and perform better.

  • If possible, get a wood chipper with a clutch that may be expensive, but, runs quieter. A clutch on your unit will allow you to not only manage heavier loads but you can also dis-engage the flails/ blades when it's not in use. Some chippers can be quite loud to operate; so, be sure to check with your local HOA or City Hall before buying a large machine.

  • Towing a wood shredder is simple and the pneumatic or semi-pneumatic tires on them make for a smooth transport.

  • Safety goggles and ear protection: Always wear gloves, earplugs, eye protection and a sturdy jacket or thick pants to prevent unnecessary accidents and injuries while operating a wood shredder.
